Indian-origin MP’s nomination for election in Canada cancelled: Canada’s ruling Liberal Party has taken a major decision ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections and has cancelled the candidacy of MP Chandra Arya. Indian-origin Hindu MP Chandra Arya had won the election from the Nepean constituency and reached Parliament. He is known as an outspoken speaker against pro-Khalistan elements. This move has created a new controversy in Canadian politics.
Arya called the decision “extremely disappointing.”
Chandra Arya posted on social media platform X that the party had cancelled his ticket. According to a letter issued by the Liberal Party, the election campaign chairman conducted a detailed review of Chandra Arya’s qualifications. After that, a recommendation was made to cancel his ticket, which the party has accepted. Arya described the decision as “extremely disappointing” but said it would not diminish his honour and pride in serving the people of Nepean.
‘I am proud of the work I have done as an MP’
He further wrote, “I have been informed by the Liberal Party that my nomination for the upcoming election in Nepean has been withdrawn. While this news is very disappointing, it does not diminish the pride and privilege of being a Member of Parliament for the people of Nepean and all Canadians since 2015. I have served this role with all my heart for the past few years. I am proud of the work I have done as an MP. I am proud of the unwavering service I have given to the people of Nepean, the principled stance I have taken on these important issues for Canadians, and the causes I have stood for in difficult times. Serving my community and country has been the greatest responsibility of my life, and for that I am eternally grateful.”
Anti-Khalistan stance and meeting with PM Modi are speculated to be the reasons.
It is worth noting that the Liberal Party has not given any clear reason behind cancelling Arya’s candidacy, which has raised many questions. Some analysts believe that his anti-Khalistan stance and meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have created unease in the party. In August last year, Arya met PM Modi in New Delhi, which the Canadian government called a “private initiative”.
